5215 and 5217 renumbered to 5296 and 5298 in 1984. 5300, 5306, 5296 to Kyle Railroad. 6230-6223, to RailAmerica. 5301, 5305, 5307, 5311, 5313 traded to EMD in 1984, scrapped. 5302, 5304, 5308, 5310 5314 were rebuilt by CEFX to SD40-2s in 1999 and leased to UP. 5303 rebuilt into a slug by ATSF in 1986, re#d SPSF 145, later ATSF 1145, to BNSF 3976. 5309 and 5312 sold for scrap. 5216 survived to UP, was retired 1999 w/o renumbering or repainting, scrapped 2003. 5298 also survived to UP, retired 1999 w/o renumbering or repainting, fate unknown.

5320 retrucked with 1H, 5323 retrucked with 2L Flexicoils. 5318 to Kyle Railroad 6233, to RailAmerica. 5319, 5322 and 5325 were sold to NREX in 84 (same #s), leased to Utah Railway from 86-88. 5322 and 5325 were repainted into Rio Grande paint as 4026-4027 for a movie & subsequently leased to the Dakota & Iowa as 4027-4028. 5319 fate unknown. 5320, 5321, 5323, 5324 sold to Copper Basin in 1984 as 301-304 (301 as a parts source). 301 sold to Helm as 6055, rebuilt to SD40M-2 (or SD40-3) for TFM numbered 1501... now KCS. 302-304 also sold to Helm (3950-3952), renumbered 351-353 . 352-353 sold to IHB as 3901-3902.

All SD39s built with 2H Flexicoil trucks. IIT and MN&S units have 3200 gallon fuel tanks ATSF and SP units have 4000 gallon fuel tanks
